TUC Survey exposing the reality of racism faced by Black Workers

The TUC is launching an online survey to expose the everyday reality of racism faced by many Black workers.  This is the first time that a survey of this kind has been carried out across the trade union movement and we want to get a large response. 

The trade union movement is committed to eradicating racism in the workplace. However, for many workers experiencing racism at work is part of their everyday life. This may take the form of racial harassment from a manager colleague, customer, or client and can result in being denied access to promotion or training.

Please can you:

• Put our banner promoting the survey on your website (banner attached please forward to your web team with the following survey link http://bit.ly/racismatwork )
• Promote through Black workers committee and other committees
• Send information on the survey to branches
• Promote through trade union newsletters, magazines etc.

We are asking non-unionised as well as unionised workers to complete the survey. The information provided will be treated in confidence and the survey can be completed anonymously.

We are also keen to hear from anyone who has witnessed any form of racial harassment or discrimination.

REST IN PEACE BOB CROW, A MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE FROM BARAC UK

Yesterday, 11th March, BARAC UK were deeply saddened to hear the news that Bob Crow, leader of the RMT union had passed away. Bob was well respected by BARAC members, courageous, inspiring and uplifting in his actions and words. 

BARAC activists have had the honour of speaking on various platforms and campaigning alongside Bob from rallies against cuts and austerity to the annual RMT / Global Afrikan Congress Reparations Conference.

Bob not only represented workers in the RMT but all of us facing cuts, austerity, poverty, discrimination and injustice in the UK and globally. We were often involved in the same campaigns, including against the disproportionate impact of cuts on black workers and  supporting family campaigns for justice and the annual United Friends and Family Campaign. RMT was amongst the first trade unions to affiliate to BARAC when we were established in 2010.

BARAC representatives, Zita Holbourne, National Co-Chair of BARAC and Hector Wesley, BARAC National Steering Group Member, both also members of the National Executive Committee of the PCS Union attended the RMT Headquarters in London yesterday, taking flowers and giving condolences on what was a very sad day. 

Bob's passing is a huge loss to our movement. BARAC believes that the best way in which we can honour Bob's memory is to continue the great legacy he leaves us to stand up for our rights with courage and determination, to fight cuts, discrimination and injustice.
