ZITA HOLBOURNE, CO-CHAIR BARAC UK TO ADDRESS PRESS CONFERENCE LAUNCHING THE PEOPLE'S ASSEMBLY

PRESS CONFERENCE TO LAUNCH MASS ANTI-AUSTERITY CAMPAIGN.

National Co-Chair of Black Activists Rising Against Cuts (BARAC) UK Zita Holbourne will address a press conference on Tuesday 26th of March, launching the People’s Assembly.

Zita will say:  ‘Millions of people are impacted by austerity, driven into deeper poverty by the Con-Dem Coalition’s agenda of cutting jobs, services and welfare. In the public sector pay has been frozen and pension contributions increased.  Whilst wages are driven down the cost of living is rising. The slashing of EMA and tripling of university tuition fees will lead to education being a privilege for the rich.

These cuts impact disproportionately on women, black (BME), disabled and young people.  I am particularly concerned about the multiple impacts on black women and young black people with black women bearing the brunt of public sector cuts and 1 in 2 young black people unemployed. We know from history that in times of economic crisis racism increases and that black and migrant people are scapegoated.  David Cameron has just announced plans to restrict access to health, housing and benefits for migrants to the UK as a means of distracting from the real causes of the economic crisis caused by bankers and failing to tackle the issue of tax avoidance, evasion and uncollected taxes by large companies.

The combined impact of these attacks is deepening poverty, inequality and injustice, leading to long term unemployment, ill health and deprivation with a whole generation of young people facing worse prospects than their parents faced.'

'We need a mass movement of all those people impacted by these attacks who make up the majority, joined by anti-cuts groups, trade unions and campaigners to respond collectively. This is why BARAC has joined the People’s Assembly campaign.'
